Years ago, in another life, I was just a college student making my way through the most complicated material I could find. Quantum physics, using the highest mathematics available.
I had already mastered every math and physics course offered and was completing my undergraduate degree, but quantum mechanics remained outside my grasp, just beyond my comprehension.
You must understand, this had never happened before. I was the Lancelot of the academic world. There were only three other guys in my major (physics) that even came close, and of those, only one who might one day become a rival.
I had never been bested in battle, and I sure as heck wouldn’t let this be a first. I would conquer quantum, find the elusive graviton, free the realm and by doing so, save the princess.
Oh, what incredible naivety.

Now that I’ve gessoed the canvas, let’s slap some paint on it.
In those days, I was usually submerged deep within the dungeon, the lower bowels of the physics department, helping Dr. Johnson in his ongoing quest to locate gravity waves.
Using a giant aluminum cylinder, the idea was that by measuring the smallest vibrations, the existence of gravity waves passing through the planet would finally be exposed, but that, my friend, is an even longer story for another day.
That was, however, where I spent most of my free time, logging in data points and theorizing as to why it wasn’t working. I was, after all, Lancelot. How could I not make this happen the way I wanted it to?
Now, here’s where the focus begins to take shape.
What would my response have been if someone had come to me back then and posed the following question… is the earth flat?
Simple enough. You may think you already know the answer, but I promise you, it’s not at all what one might have suspected.
I’ll cut to the chase.
I wouldn’t have dismissed it out of hand, I absolutely would have given it serious consideration, and wielding hindsight as a pointy weapon, I can honestly tell you that it would have saved me years of useless toil in the process.
I don’t deal in dreams, wishes and could-have’s… because the past is the past. It is what it was. But if someone had posed the right question to me back then, I would have reached the summit I’m now standing on a whole lot quicker.
There’s a trick to everything in life, and in every case, it begins with the ability to question everything around you, no matter how crazy it initially sounds.
Turns out, gravity and quantum mechanics are just unsolvable puzzles put there to distract the strongest and brightest amongst us. They aren’t real, and like most modern-day sciences, are a complete waste of time. I was never able to conquer either.
Also, I failed to save the princess.
