I had a bunch of ideas floating around in my head this morning, lots of interesting stuff to chat about, things that would curl your toes and make you sing Hallelujah right out loud, but this incessantly cold morning has scooped them all up, driven them to the outskirts of the city and carelessly dropped them off in the woods.
“Sometimes it just be that way.”
Years ago, before the great hoax, before I left the south, before I got married and had a couple of rugrats… I was just a simple, lowly dishwasher living my best life. I know things were screwed up even back then but I sure do miss those days, with a passion.
“Ain’t nothing for no stepper!”
I would go to work, punch-in using a card in an actual time clock, then make my way towards the back of the kitchen where the dishes were cleaned. I had the whole room to myself, just me and old Bessie (I named the dish washer that because she was a double loader).
Old Bessie ruled, but most importantly, she let that cheap radio sitting on her head play any station I chose. I chose rock, of course. I mean, what else is there?
“Any gal that’d let you put a cheap radio on her head while you do your thing is a keeper, son.”
Gosh, those were such carefree times and I miss them.

Rather Be Cool Than Hip
Been down in the valley for too many days Been lost in the bottle in a purple haze A shooting star, so bizarre Be careful who you praise Living on a dream ain’t all it seems especially now a days I’d rather be cool than hip any day I’d rather be young at heart either way She said I’d rather be cool than hip any day today Been lost in the valley for a week or two Dropped back in the alley by the dark and blue It’s quite bizarre, a shooting star Be careful who you praise Living on a dream ain’t all it seems especially now a days I’d rather be cool than hip any day I’d rather be young at heart either way She said I’d rather be cool than hip any day today

Those do sound like carefree days as a dishwasher.
I’d rather be cool than hip.
That song title gives me insight into 1960s words and expressions that I’d never considered before.
Being cool is meant for living in any age.
While being hip just meant that you were in tune with the times in which you were living.
But if the times you’re living in aren’t so great, you don’t want to be hip.
I love that Superman comic strip panel you posted.
The one with Lois Lane flying atop Superman’s back.
I loved the way Superman and Lois Lane were presented in comic strips of the 1930s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s.
From about 1990 on and especially since 2000, Superman and Lois Lane were being presented in a more dark fashion (as Batman’s ever annoying existential angst were being thrust on other DC super hero characters).
The Superman and Lois Lane as presented in the 1930s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s were cool.
The Superman and Lois Lane presented in the 21st Century may be hip.
But they’re not cool.

Thanks! That is exactly how I was picturing cool vs hip, but you made it even better.
Also, I totally agree about what you said about Superman/Lois. I love comic books, and I can’t stand how far they’ve fallen since the late 80s (just like everything else).
Right now, I’m reading every Superman (Omnibus volumes) from the very beginning which is pretty cool. The early comics are really crazy but they give a more accurate glimpse into the time periods.

Punch cards! I remember those :), we’ve lived through many eras all in one!

We really have, and it’s still going thanks to the great reset. I really don’t want any part of the digital pass age… but I guess we’ll see what happens.

I remember those days. Everything was so simple back in the past. You trusted your government and knew things would turn out all right even if you had a job and could make rent. Things sure have changed.

Right? Those were awesome times because we were more free-range. The yard was bigger and you could still hide from the master. 🙂
